Meet Colin, a 39-year-old former features writer for London Week magazine. After a life-changing climb on Mount Snowdon ("What is it about human beings that we feel we have to climb a bloody mountain to get answers?") and a fortuitous conversation with the landlady of his local pub, he realises that there is more to life than living the status quo. But where does he begin?
Then there’s Tyler, 20-year-old snowboarder and raver. He’s just completed a four-year party that could loosely be described as a university education. Although his banker father has kept him afloat in booze and drugs, the plug has now been pulled and he’s been set adrift with one last float ("A fucking $20,000 limit, man. Can you believe it?" ) Up until now, all party, little consciousness and even less focus, he now has to come to terms with being on his own - with no particular destination in sight.
Directly south from Tyler is Emma, a 24-year-old American bartender working the night shift at The Cactus Bar and Grill. ("Look around. Emma Miller, this is your life. Oh God. Shoot me now.") Bright and very determined, she knows that it’s possible to do something in this world that means more than serving drinks to a perpetually inebriated clientele. But what...and how?
Finally, halfway around the world in Australia is Rhiannon ("My parents were big Fleetwood Mac fans.") They raised her to believe that peace and love will always prevail. That philosophy landed her in a fatal marriage to a bloke who beat her so badly she had a miscarriage. Now 29 and divorced, she’s in Kalgoorlie, working in "a bullshit job in a pink collar world and singing in this awful bar band Gold Mine." Although she doesn’t yet realise it, her New Age background and some surprising synchronicities will take her to places she’s never dreamed of being.
Although they don't know it yet, these four diverse characters from different countries and cultures are about to cross paths. They will travel together on their collective journey in what will be an adventure spanning several European countries, many long days and even longer nights.
